Core classes. Mandatory classes. Gen Ed classes. Whatever name colleges use for classes every student must take, the takeaway I hear from many professors and students is the same: forcing classes on students sours them on those classes pretty much immediately.
I get it from the college’s perspective, i.e., trying to plan for who would take what class should all classes simply be “open” could be a logistical nightmare.
But why is this different than any other business with “inventory” issues? And is this really a reason to charge a fortune but deliver something the customer (here – the student) doesn’t want?
